Introduction

3D Slicer is a cross platform desktop application for

  • image visualization and
  • image processing

  • Computers running 3d Slicer need enough memory and graphics capabilities to hold the original data and the processing results in local memory.

Hardware Configuration

  • Precompiled 64bit versions of Slicer 4.0 are available for Windows7, Linux, and Mac OS X.
  • The main memory should be more than 4GB (8 or more recommended).
  • The system display should have a minimum resolution of 1024 by 768. A resolution of 1280 by 1024 or better is recommended.
  • If you want to use volume rendering, make sure you work with a computer that has dedicated graphics hardware and memory. You should have enough graphics memory to hold your data set. 1GB is recommended. In general, we have seen fewer issues with volume rendering using nvidia graphics cards.
  • Many compuations in Slicer are multi-threaded and will benefit from the presence of multiple cores/CPUs.
  • A three button mouse with scroll wheel recommended.

Recommended OS versions

  • Windows 7 64bit
  • Mac OS X Lion
  • Linux: recent versions of popular distributions should work. Ubuntu and Fedora are the most widely used distribution among the developers.
